This Jacko, Not So Wacko.
It's the little things in life that make a difference. You may not think that when a band goes on tour they're creating an environmental hazard, but surf-music superstar Jack Johnson knows better.
That's why on his most recent tour of the US and Canada, Johnson took extra precautions to ensure his travels were as environmentally friendly as possible. Teaming up with 1% For The Planet Alliance, Jack Johnson and his tour buddies did the following:Converted the tour bus' fuel to biodiesal - a clean burning alternative to average fuel
Switched to eco-friendly merchandise - T-shirts were made from organic cotton whilst posters were made from recycled paper. Unsurprisingly, reusable water bottles and hemp tote bags were best sellers.
Donated $55,000 of the show's income to 1% For The Planet non-profit groups, including Heal The Ocean
Donated $9,000 from the sale of his "Live in Kokua" DVD to Kokua Hawaii Foundation
Recycled all food and beverage containers used and donated left-over food to local shelters
Made suggestions and encouraged venues to adopt environmentally friendly practices
Ate only organic food
Obtained CO2 Offsets & Climate-neutral Certification - the tour contributed $3489 to the Native Energy Fund for the creation of energy producing windmills
Amazingly, Johnson's generosity does not end there. He donated $5,000 from each show between August 31st and September 17th to the American Red Cross in aid of the victims of Hurricane Katrina, totalling $65,000. As well as $57,835 raised from fans and ticket auctions, Johnson donated over $122,835 to the Hurricane Katrina relieve.
