Look out Ireland, here comes Sheedy

Sheedy, the AFL's longest-serving coach, will replace Garry Lyon for the annual Australia-Ireland competition.
He will be the first to combine club and international coaching.

Sheedy, 57, will take up his duties immediately after Essendon completes its commitments this year, and will take a team to Ireland in 2006.

Kevin SheedyThe appointment gives further credibility to the international rules concept and comes on top of an AFL commitment for another 10 years.
Collingwood coach Michael Malthouse and former Richmond coach Danny Frawley had been linked to the role, but the AFL will be thrilled to have Sheedy.

Not only is he a four-time premiership coach, he is the busiest and most imaginative marketing force in the game. Despite his origins, he is bound to have the Irish scratching their heads.

Sheedy always has been a staunch supporter of representative football and toured Ireland as a player with Harry Beitzel's teams in the 1960s and '70s
.
Today's appointment is the first hint of Sheedy looking beyond a career as a club coach, which started in 1981.

He has two seasons to run at Essendon, but there has been a school of thought for several years he will finish with the AFL in an ambassadorial role.

Lyon coached Australia from 2001-04. He followed Dermott Brereton, who followed Leigh Matthews.

Neil Murray Wins Environmental Award

Neil MurrayAustralian singer/songwriter Neil Murray has been granted the Glenelg Hopkins CMA Award for his work for the environment.

Murray has worked with community organizations including the hEEling Walk and Eel Festival in Lake Bolac to help raise awareness on environmental issues.

Neil Murray commented, "Although the award is an individual award I could not have done (the heeling walk) without the help of a lot of like minded people. People who feel, like myself, a deep and abiding connection to the land and a desire to live in harmony with it."

"Neil's ability to bring together a community for the common goal of raising awareness on a range of issues makes him a true environmental achiever", said Colin Dunkley, CEO, Glenelg Hopkins CMA.

Neil Murray is a founding member of Warumpi Band and penned two Australian classic tunes, My Island Home, later released by Christine Anu, and a song that I have in my
TOP 8 greatest songs, Black Fella White Fella, later covered by Powderfinger.

LITTLE DO THEY KNOW

Kentucky Fried Cruelty

Something For Kate is sticking up for chickens. The Melbourne band has joined People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) and released an advertisement condemning Kentucky Fried Chicken.

The ad shows the band crouched in a glass tube and features the statement "Cramped, Scared, Abused: See Life Through the Eyes of a KFC Chicken".

SFK wish to pressure KFC to improve welfare at its factory and abattoir suppliers.
PETA's investigation has uncovered alleged animal abuses including crippled chickens living in crowded, filthy conditions and sadistically tortured.

In other SFK news, the band has returned to the studio and is working on the next album. A release date is yet to be determined.

Foo Fighters To Play Roswell

Foo Fighters

Foo Fighters are heading to Roswell, the place where mysterious UFO was allegedly sighted and an alien captured in the 40s.

Foo Fighters will perform for 500 fans at a one-off invitation only gig at walker Air Force base later this month.

The base is where the U.S. government allegedly stored evidence from the crash of a mysterious unidentified flying object in July 1947.

"This is a long overdue and historic moment for this band," says Foo Fighters founder Dave Grohl. "Despite being in a band called Foo Fighters, having a label called Roswell Records, and being a total UFO nut, I have never been to Roswell, NM. So the fact that we finally get to go to Roswell and play a gig in the same hangar where they allegedly stored the remains of the 1947 UFO crash blows my mind. I can't think of a better way to celebrate the band's 10 year anniversary."

Foo Fighters took their name from similarly mysterious unidentified glowing balls that Allied and German pilots reported seeing at night during World War II. The pilots dubbed these objects "foo fighters," after a popular comic strip of the era.

They named their record label Roswell Records.
